Youth voices at COP30: Heritage, climate and hope

In COP30’s Blue Zone, the INTO booth display introduces the INTO Youth Committee onto the world stage – a global network of young leaders who believe that heritage is not just about the past, it’s about shaping a resilient, inclusive future.

Why the Youth Committee matters

This passionate group represents cultures and communities from almost every corner of the world. They are artists, activists, educators and innovators united by a common purpose: to connect heritage and nature in the fight against climate change. Their message is clear – our traditions, landscapes and identities are powerful tools for sustainability.

Nigel Maduro, an INTO Youth Committee member from Aruba in the Caribbean, shared a personal insight:

‘COP30 has been very eye-opening to me, as an Indigenous Caribbean person. Being surrounded by other Indigenous Peoples from other nations has let me understand the interconnectedness of our issues and how we are all facing the same or similar struggles when it comes to climate change, human rights, and Indigenous Peoples representation. I am honored to bring my culture and my heritage as an INTO delegate at UNFCCC COP30.’

As the world turns its attention to COP30 in Brazil, INTO is urging global leaders to recognise a vital truth: heritage is not just at risk from climate change – it is part of the solution.

INTO’s mission: building bridges

Nigel’s words speak to the heart of INTO’s work – connecting heritage and nature organisations worldwide to share knowledge, understand challenges, and grow stronger together. The Youth Committee embodies this mission, proving that collaboration across generations and cultures is the key to a sustainable future.

Thank you

The core INTO team have been watching this COP from afar, while our representatives have made the case for heritage and climate on the ground in Brazil. We’re very proud to be able to support and share the work of our members, partners and supporters, while passing on opportunities to attend and experience COP through our status as an observer organisation.

We look ahead to COP31 in Turkey for more opportunities expand our network and to further promote centring heritage in climate solutions.
